Purpose and safe boundaries

Pre-use and post-use inspections for radios, power banks, solar charging, spare cells and emergency tools.

Reviewed: November 2026. This educational guide does not replace accredited training, equipment manuals, local rules, medical professionals or live emergency instructions.

The 5-point inspection

  1. Housing: examine cracks, corrosion, leaks and ingress seals. Retire damaged pressurized or battery devices.
  2. Power: confirm correct battery chemistry and polarity; inspect chargers and cables for heat damage.
  3. Controls: check labeled switches, screens, locks, seals and safety interlocks without disabling protection.
  4. Function: carry out the manufacturer’s permitted self-test; never issue a false beacon distress alert.
  5. Record: write the inspection date, remaining battery, defect and next service due date.

Battery safety

Keep spare cells in insulated holders; protect terminals from keys and coins. Do not charge swollen, hot, punctured or wet batteries. Use the correct power supply and a ventilated dry place. Treat lithium battery smoke or hissing as an urgent fire hazard; evacuate and call emergency services if necessary. Store power banks within manufacturer-recommended temperature ranges.

Solar and portable charging

Use a regulated USB output or compatible controller; do not connect a bare solar panel directly to an unsupported device. Keep connectors dry, place panels to avoid tripping hazards, and budget for shorter winter days and cloud cover. Test your whole kit—not just individual components—under planned loads.

Generators and combustion hazards

Never operate petrol, diesel, propane or charcoal appliances indoors, inside a tent or next to openings. Follow manufacturer spacing and carbon-monoxide safety instructions. Refuel only when cool and off, keep fuel in approved containers, and use properly rated outdoor cables.

Maintenance kit and fault rule

Carry a labelled spare cable, dry bag, fuse of the specified rating, tape, cloth, spare batteries, contact brush and repair log. Do not bypass safety fuses, alter rescue beacons, repair high-voltage battery packs or field-patch pressurized life equipment; quarantine damaged items for qualified service.
