Prepare before losing reception

Download the destination map area, trail data and emergency contact information using trusted mapping software while you have a connection. Verify that the selected download includes the full route and nearby exit corridors. Enable offline availability, then test in airplane mode. Software is a supplement to paper maps and a compass, not a replacement.

Check the map before travel

  1. Confirm the map’s publication date and suitability for current access restrictions; do not assume old trails or bridges remain open.
  2. Set the correct coordinate format, map datum and distance units, and understand how to switch between latitude/longitude and grid references.
  3. Save departure, camp, water, emergency exit and rendezvous waypoints; mark a no-go boundary.
  4. Export an offline backup of essential waypoints to a second device or a printed map when feasible.

Use the phone without exhausting the battery

Carry a protected power bank, dry charging cables and a separate light source. Reduce brightness and unnecessary radios; enable airplane mode when there is no need to listen for messages. GPS may continue working offline but satellite lock and map availability vary by device. Avoid storing sensitive personal medical data in unsecured shared map files.

Incident log and reporting

Create a simple offline note with incident number, time zone, GPS location, actions, owner and next update time. Distinguish verified observations from unconfirmed reports. Save edits locally before leaving a screen; share only the minimum necessary details with responders and maintain a paper fallback.
