Purpose and safe boundaries

Practical checks for road vehicles, 4×4s and boats: controls, dashboard warnings, loading, recovery and incident shutdown.

Only operate vehicles you are trained and licensed to use

Model-specific manuals, roadway rules and marine training take precedence. Never drive while exhausted or impaired. Do not bypass interlocks, operate damaged brakes or enter water of unknown depth. For unknown vehicles, identify the parking brake, transmission positions, emergency stop, fuel type and location of safety equipment before departure.

Daily walk-around

  1. Inspect tyres, tread, visible leaks, loose items, glass, lighting, underbody, tow attachment and emergency equipment.
  2. Check manufacturer-specified coolant, oil, battery and fuel/electric range; never open a hot coolant system.
  3. Confirm seat belts, mirrors, load restraint, route, weather, communications and an alternative exit.
  4. Start according to the vehicle manual; verify warning lamps and do not move if critical brake, temperature or oil-pressure warnings persist.

Safe operation in remote places

Use an appropriate vehicle and route. Reduce speed on gravel and limited-visibility tracks; avoid uncertain crossings, floodwater, unstable shoulders and steep side slopes. Maintain a reserve of fuel/charge and water. If stuck, stop wheel spinning and assess ground, stability and traffic. Powered recovery equipment and winches create lethal snap-back hazards: only trained personnel with rated gear and an exclusion zone should use them.

Vehicle breakdown / incident

Move to a safe location if possible; activate hazard lights and secure the vehicle. If on a high-speed road, follow local rules for safe refuge and traffic warnings. Turn off the engine when safe; do not approach damaged high-voltage EV components or a leaking fuel system. Report exact position, road marker, injuries, traffic exposure and vehicle type. Do not start a vehicle in a closed space.

Small powerboat-specific notes

Check life jackets, weather, bilge, engine cutoff lanyard, fuel ventilation, navigation lights, kill switch and marine VHF before leaving shore. Review steering, throttle and neutral controls under supervision before maneuvering. At a collision or person-overboard event, prioritize flotation, stopping propulsion safely and calling rescue services.
